Airfare Hikes Come After Blizzard’s Travel Chaos
Several airlines plan to implement airfare hikes in the new year, raising domestic route tickets $10 one way and $20 round trip, AP said Tuesday.
United, Continental, American, and Delta say the raised prices are effective immediately, while Southwest did not confirm a change.
Travel website FareCompare.com claims that the hikes are the result of surging fuel costs. Oil prices climbed past $90 a barrel on the New York Mercantile Exchange this week.
The announcement comes after a major snow storm on the East Coast grounded flights and left thousands of passengers stranded in airports for days.
“In the midst of one of the worst travel disruptions of the year that saw thousands of passengers stranded at airports along the Eastern seaboard due to blizzard conditions, airfare prices are on the rise,” said Graeme Wallace of FareCompare, according to AP.
