Alex Higgins, an Irish man and former world snooker champion, died on Saturday, July 24, at the age of 61 due to throat cancer. He was born on 18 March 1949, Belfast, Northern Ireland.

Alex Higgins, also known by his nickname of Hurricane Higgins, was a Northern Irish professional snooker player who was a two-time World Champion and runner-up on two events. Higgins earned the nickname The Hurricane due to his rapidity in playing.

Higgins fought with financial problems and drunkenness. He also confessed using cocaine and marijuana. He was identified with throat cancer in 1997

Higgins was an inspiration to countless of today’s professional snooker players as well as Ken Doherty, Jimmy White and Ronnie O’Sullivan who in an interview affirmed “Alex was a motivation to players like Jimmy White and thousands of snooker players all over the countryside, including me. The technique he played at his best is the way I consider the game should be played. It was on the boundary, keeping the crowd keep amused and fastened to the action.”
