Owen Wilson Death Hoax “Absolutely False,” Says Rep
Owen Wilson is the latest in a long line of stars falsely reported to have died. Viral Tweets and Facebook posts claimed the “How Do You Know” actor had been killed in an accident, but he is reportedly alive and well.
Internet gossip-fueled death hoaxes have become increasingly frequent lately. Other recent false reports involved Adam Sandler, Aretha Franklin, and Eddie Murphy.
The misinformation spread to tabloid-style blogs and news websites, which reported that Wilson died in a snowboarding accident.
Wilson’s rep told New York Daily News that the rumor was “absolutely false.”
On August 26, 2007, Wilson was taken to St. John’s Health Center amid reports of a suicide attempt. He was later transferred to Cedars-Sinai Medical Center in Los Angeles.
Wilson’s lawyer later confirmed that the actor had been undergoing treatment for depression. A few days later, Wilson withdrew from his starring role in “Tropic Thunder,” produced by and starring good friend and frequent collaborator, Ben Stiller. Since the apparent suicide attempt, Wilson has done limited publicity and promotion for his films and he has never spoken publicly about his 2007 hospitalization.
